"Bottled water is not new. When early man first emerged from caves, these hunters and gatherers knew the importance of good drinking water while traveling from home. Water from pure sources was transported in animal skins. Later, ancient Greeks and Romans would journey great distances to collect spring water in clay jugs to bring to their communities. In 15th-century Europe, water was being bottled and provided to royal courts. By the late 1800s, bottled water was recognized throughout the world for its health-giving properties. For todays bottler, providing water from a protected source is as much a public service as a business.”

Springs have always been gathering places. People believed that spring water – surfacing from underground, where it was purified by sand and rocks, to meet the light of day – was the cleanest source. Throughout history, mankind has settled near springs. The vessels in which they carried water to their dwellings – whether in hides or earthen jugs – were the earliest forms of bottled water.
