Nestlé Waters North America has joined forces with the Florida Wildlife Federation to launch a statewide springs protection and improvement initiative in the Sunshine State. The initiative’s goals are to increase public awareness of the interconnectivity of springs and sinkholes, develop a grassroots network of springs advocates and volunteers, and educate policy makers about the need for comprehensive springs protection policies.
Among the highlights of the initiative are new “spring cleaning teams” led by Florida Wildlife Federation members in communities around the state. Nestlé Waters North America plans to fund small grants to the teams in various communities to help them identify and remove sources of pollution around or nearby springs and sinkholes. The Company is also working with the Federation to develop a springs education workshop for elected officials and planning staffs from cities and counties in Florida where springs are prevalent.
In addition to these efforts, Nestlé Waters North America is encouraging ongoing study of the springs and springs’ ecosystems through a joint “Florida Springs Champion” award that will provide the recipient with funding to carry on his or her work. The winner will be selected by the Florida Wildlife Federation from among nominees statewide.
