“The Nestlé Environmental Management System (NEMS) is a commitment to Environmentally Sound Business Practices throughout the world. This is accomplished by integrating environmental principles, programs and practices into every business and market while striving for continuous improvement of environmental performance. The NEMS program mandates compliance with all federal and local regulations and provides appropriate information, communication and training to build internal and external understanding concerning the company’s environmental commitment.”

Water is essential for life. For nutrition. For the environment. And, for industry.

As the world’s leading food and beverage company, and world leader in bottled waters, Nestlé takes seriously its responsibility toward the sustainable use of water resources. Nestlé Waters, the company’s bottled water division, uses only a fraction (0.0009 percent) of freshwater drawn worldwide, but its commitment to environmental stewardship runs deep.

Compliance with environmental legislation is a must. When local legislation on water protection is non-existent or insufficient to meet the company’s environmental commitments, Nestlé’s Environmental Minimum Technical Requirements apply. These set minimum requirements must be followed in the water area as well as in other environmental areas.

Continuous improvement, as emphasized by NEMS, relies on clear objectives and action programs at global and local levels. In the water area, both water conservation and wastewater reduction are targeted by environmental programs. Actual progress in meeting objectives is monitored through periodic environmental performance indicators covering water consumption and wastewater generation. Appropriate training reinforces employees’ awareness and skills, and contributes to their efficiency.
