With the current NY bottle bill taking effect June 1, time is of the essence for the government to take action by amending the bill.
Nestlé Waters supports a modern bottle bill that is pro-environment, pro-health, and pro-consumer – which the current bill is not.
The current New York Bottle Bill hurts recycling efforts!
Every year, Americans generate roughly 30 million tons of waste from household containers and only a quarter of that is recycled. Rather than being a part of the solution, the Bottle Bill, in its current form, undermines the value of curbside recycling – proven to be the most effective form of recycling. This bill will choke local recycling budgets, by taking bottles out of curbside collection. Bottled water is currently the most recycled item in curbside recycling, so it would remove municipalities’ greatest source of revenue. Moreover, unlike other bottle bills that return funds to community recycling programs to support curbside, the funds generated by this law will be earmarked for unrelated items.
The current New York Bottle Bill promotes unhealthy sugar-based drinks!
We need a bill that promotes healthy options for consumers and parents. This bill excludes sugar-based drinks from its additional fees, making these high-calorie beverages cheaper and more accessible to consumers.
The current New York Bottle Bill favors special interests!
We need a level playing field for bottled drinks, so consumers can benefit from competition and choice. This bill favors certain brands and products and makes others more expensive to the consumer.
The bill must be amended to remove the roadblocks for consumer recycling and maintain its original environment and conservation goals.
