Tim Brown Talks Beverage Trends on CNBC

Tim Brown on CNBC

On Monday December 8, Chairman, President & CEO Tim Brown met with the hosts of CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange to discuss trends in the beverage industry.

The interview focused on the proliferation of bottled water and subsequent decline of soft drink consumption. By 2016, bottled water consumption per capita is expected to outpace consumer soft drinks. Tim suggested that health is one of the driving factors behind this trend, stating: “Since the turn of the century, we’ve seen a sharp increase in the per capita consumption of water in any form, bottled and tap. That’s followed the decline of consumer soft drinks and other beverages. It’s all health related.”

When co-host, Simon Hobbs deemed the transportation of bottled water to market ‘environmentally unsound’ and an ‘Achilles heel,’ Tim shared NWNA’s sustainability efforts related to packaging and transportation.

“We look at those types of things as potential for waste-reduction. We’ve reduced 60% of the plastic out of our bottle over the last ten years. Additionally, as the category grows we move our spring sources closer to the marketplace and so that’s less road miles driven. In fact, our average bottle travels less than 200 miles from source to market.”
