So that consumers can exchange their empty 5-gallon water bottles for filled ones, Nestlé Waters North America follows a “Retail Bottle Exchange Program” instituted by many supermarket chains and other retailers where our 5-gallon bottled water products are sold. Recently, we have received some questions regarding this bottle exchange policy.
So, how does it work?
Under the Bottle Exchange Program, which has been in place for several years, a consumer pays a “bottle exchange fee” with their initial purchase of a 5-gallon bottle of water from a participating retailer.
Upon return of that empty 5-gallon bottle, a consumer can buy a filled 5-gallon bottle of water without having to pay the bottle exchange fee again.
*Unlike smaller beverage bottles that may be subject to a state mandated bottle deposit program, 5-gallon water bottles are not subject to the collection of bottle deposits and refunds are not paid for their return.
Signs, like the ones below, which describe the “Bottle Exchange Fee” are posted on the shelves near the bottles.
