According to a report called “Closing the water access gap in the United States,” race is the strongest predictor of access to running water and sanitation in the United States. During the COVID-19 pandemic, water has become even more important. To that end, Nestlé Waters North America has donated over 260,000 gallons of bottled water to the Navajo Nation. In a coordinated, emergency response, working with DigDeep, a human rights nonprofit with the mission of providing clean, running water to Americans who lack access, a grassroots network of volunteers distributed the water to an estimated 30,000 residents.
In a recent segment on ABC-TV’s “Good Morning America,” Emma Robbins, DigDeep’s Director of the Navajo Water Project, tells the story of the Navajo Nation and the challenges they face due to lack of access to water during the COVID-19 pandemic.
